Johnell “Jay“ Anthony Holman is married to Audrey A. Holman and father of Patrice, Marshall, Justin (US Air Force) and Kristina (US Navy), and a grandfather of 8. A graduate from Dreher High School in Columbia, South Carolina where he was Senior Class President in 1978. He was an NROTC Midshipman at the University of South Carolina.
He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Associates degree in Sociology from the University of the State of New York. He is a graduate of Charlotte School of Law Paralegal Certificate program.
Jay joined the United States Navy and served for 14 years, where he was stationed on both Submarines and Battleships earning his Submarine Service and Surface Warfare Specialist designations. Jay was a combat systems specialist and a Navy Security Police Officer. While stationed in Atsugi, Japan, he was the Physical Security Advisor to the Commander of the US Naval Forces Japan. He formulated and negotiated physical and personnel security procedures and requirements for the Iwo Jima Base Support Agreements between Commander, US Naval Forces Japan and Commander, Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force which earned him the Navy Achievement Medal.
After the Navy, Jay returned to the Carolinas to start HJH Residential Inc., a custom home remodeling company where he remains President and Owner. He is also Principal of The J. Anthony Holman Group, LLC and Sole Proprietor of J. Richard Holman Distilleries. He continues to work as a Paralegal in Charlotte. Throughout the years he has managed or co-managed several critical political campaigns such as Peter Norris (NC House), Stephanie Sneed (Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board), Justin Harlow (Charlotte City Council) and Mark Jerrell (Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners).
Jay has been a strong advocate for the citizens of Charlotte. He is currently servicing as the Vice Chair for Precinct 95. He was instrumental in pushing through reforms of the Citizen's Review Board. Holman is a dedicated member of the Black Political Caucus, the current Black Leadership Caucus PAC President, and Former Vice President of the National Action Network’s Charlotte Chapter for Legislative Advocacy. Additionally, he has served on the Charlotte City Council Privatization and Competition Advisory Committee and Charlotte International Cabinet.
